Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a new Low-Light Mode aimed at improving the video call experience in dimly lit environments. This new feature comes as part of WhatsApp’s continuous effort to enhance video calls, following recent updates that introduced filters and virtual backgrounds. With Low-Light Mode, users can now enjoy clearer and crisper video quality during calls, even when lighting conditions aren’t ideal, reducing graininess and enhancing the overall visual experience.
How to Enable WhatsApp’s Low-Light Mode for Video Calls
Enabling the Low-Light Mode on WhatsApp is simple and available for both iOS and Android users. Unfortunately, this feature has not yet been extended to the web version of the app. Here’s how you can activate it:

Steps to Use Low-Light Mode on WhatsApp:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Start a video call with any contact.
- During the call, tap the bulb icon located at the top right corner of the screen.
- Low-Light Mode will automatically adjust the lighting to improve video quality.
- If the feature isn’t useful for your environment, you can easily disable it by tapping the icon again.
This simple toggle can make a significant difference when attending video calls in low-light environments, helping users maintain a professional appearance or simply making personal conversations clearer.
WhatsApp’s Latest Update: Custom Chat Themes
In addition to the Low-Light Mode, WhatsApp has also introduced a custom chat themes feature. This latest update gives users greater flexibility in personalizing their conversations. Initially available to select beta users via WhatsApp version 2.24.21.34 for Android and version 24.20.71 for iOS, this feature enables users to modify chat themes and customize the look and feel of individual conversations.
WhatsApp’s Custom Chat Themes allow for:
- Access to 22 different themes, each offering up to 20 color variations.
- The ability to adjust both the chat background and the conversation color.
- Universal themes applicable across all chats or individual themes for specific conversations.
The chat themes are visible only to the person who sets them, ensuring privacy is maintained on both ends. This update is currently available to users enrolled in the Google Play Beta Program, but a broader rollout is expected soon.
A New Era of Personalization and Better Video Quality
WhatsApp’s introduction of Low-Light Mode and Custom Chat Themes marks another step forward in its mission to enhance user experience, whether you’re making video calls or chatting with friends. With these features, WhatsApp aims to provide more versatility and customization to its vast user base.
As the app continues to evolve, users can look forward to more exciting updates that improve usability, personalization, and overall communication experiences.
